Teachers follow the curriculum prescribed by the Diocese of Harrisburg, which integrates the Common Core Standards into the current curriculum.
In Language Arts, grades K-3 use Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA). The CKLA program is based on the science of reading, a collection of research that supports the most effective methods of teaching literacy. CKLA combines a systematic and multi-sensory approach to phonics with rich texts carefully sequenced to build content knowledge so that students learn to read and read to learn simultaneously.
Students complete lessons that build foundational reading skills (the Skills Strand) and background knowledge and vocabulary critical to listening, oral language skills, and reading comprehension (the Knowledge Strand). The Skills Strand provides comprehensive instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, and word recognition, language skills (including conventions of English, spelling, and grammar), reading comprehension, and writing instruction. Knowledge units combine reading and writing skills with in-depth science and social studies content.
In grades K-2 the Skills and Knowledge Strands are taught separately. In grade 3, the Skills and Knowledge Strands are taught together.
In Kindergarten, Knowledge topics include Nursery Rhymes and Fables, The Five Senses, Stories, Plants, Farms, Native Americans, Kings and Queens, Seasons and Weather, Columbus and the Pilgrims, Colonial Towns, and Townspeople, Taking Care of the Earth, and Presidents and American Symbols.
To begin Kindergarten, children must be 5 years of age by September 1st. No exceptions or testing will be made regarding age requirements.
In first grade, Knowledge topics include Fables and Stories, the Human Body, Different Lands-Similar Stories, Early World Civilizations, Early American Civilizations, Astronomy, The History of the Earth, Animals and Habitats, Fairy Tales, A New Nation: American Independence, and Frontier Explorers.
In Math, first graders will continue to develop an understanding of numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems. They will understand the meanings and use of operations, know how they relate to each other, learn to calculate accurately and fluently both addition and subtraction facts and learn to make reasonable estimates. They will demonstrate an understanding of measurable attributes of objects and figures and the units, systems, and measurement processes. First graders will develop algebraic concepts to understand patterns, relations, and functions and explore data analysis and probability. Students develop skills through various experiences, including hands-on activities, peer collaboration, and technology.
In Religion, some topics that will be covered include the Holy Mass, Seasons of the Church, Scripture and Bible stories, the Holy Family, the Holy Trinity, Saints and Holy People, and the Sacraments. We learn and recite prayers and have prayer partners to help us learn and grow in our Faith.
Welcome to the exciting world of second grade at Saint Patrick School! In this pivotal year, our students embark on a journey of exploration, learning, and growth. Let's take a closer look at the enriching topics and skills covered in second grade:
Integrated Language Arts (ILA)
In Integrated Language Arts, second graders hone their reading and comprehension skills through various genres. They progress from crafting simple paragraphs to composing intricate stories, expository pieces, and persuasive writing. Additionally, students master cursive writing, adding a new dimension to their language skills.
Mathematics
In mathematics, second graders tackle a wide range of concepts. They build a solid foundation with addition and subtraction facts before progressing to double-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. Students learn to read analog clocks, explore graphing and measurement, skip count (laying the groundwork for multiplication), handle money, and develop problem-solving strategies. Geometric theories are also introduced, fostering spatial thinking.
Religion
Second grade is a time for spiritual growth and understanding. Students gain a deeper appreciation for the Mass by actively participating through prayer, singing, and responding. They delve into the sacraments, the commandments, and Catholic beliefs. The scriptures come alive as students explore how these stories shape their faith. Second graders also prepare for the meaningful milestones of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
We invite you to join us as we guide our students through this transformative journey of knowledge, skills, and faith.
In third grade, Knowledge topics include Classic Tales, Animal Classification, The Human Body: Systems and Senses, The Ancient Roman Civilization, Light and Sound, The Viking Age, Astronomy: Our Solar System and Beyond, Native Americans: Regions and Cultures, Early Explorations of North America, Colonial America, and Ecology.
In math, we continue to build upon our understanding of number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Our focus topics also include time, money, geometry, data, and fractions. Multiplication and division are a primary focus this year. We utilize the Sadlier Oxford: Progress in Mathematics series, manipulatives, technology, and various forms of instruction to support students in developing a foundation in mathematical practices and computational skills.
Third graders learn about their faith through Scripture and prayer. We study the sacraments and attend weekly Mass. We focus on seeing God in ourselves, each other, and our community.
