About the Purple Star Program
We are proud to be a Purple Star school. A partnership between the Military Child Education Coalition and individual states, the Purple Star program is designed to help schools respond to the education and social-emotional challenges military-connected children face during their transition to a new school and help keep them on track to be college, workforce, and life-ready.
Pennsylvania is one of 41 participating states that have completed MCEC's rigorous steps to gain Purple Star status. They confer designation to Local Education Agencies and schools for their commitment to serving military-connected families and students. The Purple Star designation is for three years, after which renewal is required.
Who Qualifies?
The Purple Star program defines military-connected as children of servicemembers serving on active duty, in the National Guard, or Reserves. Saint Patrick School has chosen to also include children of veterans and retirees in our activities because they add a wealth of knowledge and personal experience that helps our new military families acclimate faster and better.
Military children often move every 2-3 years. The majority of military-connected students at Saint Patrick School are only here for one year, as their parent attends the Army War College. We have a unique opportunity to support not only the student but the whole family.
Learn More
Receiving Purple Star designation requires schools to adopt and implement several supports and resources for military families, such as having a designated staff member serving as a military liaison, hosting monthly activities to help military families integrate into the school community, and posting readily available information on the school's website to make the transition easy for military families coming into and leaving the school.
